Abstract:

Box 1 relates primarily to her translation of Jean Nicolas Perlot's autobiography, Gold Seeker. Included is correspondence with Alfred A. Knopf, Dale L. Morgan, Ghislaine LeJeune (Perlot's granddaughter) and others; notes; a photocopy of her manuscript, and several reviews of the book. Box 2 contains typescript drafts which are indexes of the writings of nine California Franciscan priests.
Additions (cartons 1-9, box 3, oversize boxes 1-2) include correspondence, journals, writings, ephemera, personalia, and professional papers of Helen Harding Bretnor. Papers include her personal writings which include both prose and poetry and work she conducted in her role as librarian, including translations of Edouard Auger's "Les Hounds de San Francisco" and J.N. Perlot's "A Belgian Argonaut" and her work editing and writing the forward to the 1962 publication of Edward Cleveland Kemble's "History of California Newspapers." Also includes a small series of material on her husband, author and publisher Reginald Bretnor.
